Types of Photography

For my photography research I have been looking at different types of photography such as; editorial photography, Portraits, Fashion Photography, landscapes, artistic and photography.

For my Research I have decided to concentrate completely on the two types of photography which most interest me – Fashion and portraits.  I have been Researching the all the different Fashion photographers I can, picking my favourites as I go along.

I have been studying one photographer in particular called David LaChapelle, David crosses every line that shouldn’t be crossed, yet some how, he gets away with it.  For instance; He has taken so many pictures of celebrities and he will have the celebrity there, then he will have something extreme or extravagant surrounding them on over them, this is effective in the photograph for a number of reasons, people are drawn to the pictures because they are pictures of icons and people who the public look at every day, these pictures make the celebrities or models stand out in an extreme way people want to see what David Lachapelle has done to them. His photographs are always very bright and stand out, often some of them are over exposed with the lightning very bright making the picture stand out and it makes a statement.

So far I have come across a photographer who I find particularly interesting – His name is Lachlan Bailey, born and raised in Australia he started studying media but have eventually turned his interests to photography. Lachlan re-located to London in 2001, he has taken photos for Japanese Vogue,British Vogue,Vogue China and i-D magazine, as well as other magazines such as Arena Homme +,POP and Dazed and Confused.

From looking at this Photograph of Kate Moss I can see the different techniques and styles which have been used to create this photo.  The photograph is clearly a fashion photograph – firstly I can see this from the hair and make up in the photograph, Kate moss has been made up with very 1920’s hair and make up, the loose finger waves and dark lips give it a 1920’s looks adding to the black and white background which effectively makes the picture look older than it is. The thing I like about this photograph is it is so modern yet it looks so old, you can also tell that this is actually a photograph from the modern day for a number of reasons – despite the fact it uses a famous model and a modern day icon.

The clothes she is wearing are clearly modern, you can tell from how the dress that she is wearing is cut, it is cut very low on the chest, this would have been very much frowned upon in the 1940’s.  The photograph has been taken from a low angle looking up towards Kate, this angle in itself is quite provocative.

This shoot has used a side lighting from what I can see there are shadows on only one side of her body and the photograph, this in some areas is making the photograph look darker which also adds age to the photograph, I think over all the main aim of this photograph was to capture a fashion image of a lustful 1940’s woman, with a modern twist.

Another type of photography I have researched is portraits, portraits interest me for the reason that they are always of people, meaning there can never be two portraits the same, different faces and people make the portraits what they are.

One of the most famous portrait photographers I have come across whilst researching is Gertrude Kasebier, she was one of the most influential American portrait photographers of the early 20th century – her work concentrated mainly on the face of the person she was photographing.

The two pictures I have posted into this blog; Fashion photography by Lachlan Bailey and the portrait by Gertrude Kasebier are completely different and similar in their own ways, both photos are of women, one of an infamous model and the other of a simple 20th century woman. Technically both photos could be portraits and they are both reasonably close to the face and of the structure of how

their body is sitting, however the Lachlan Bailey photograph has a definite fashion twist about it. which I have previously spoke about. This photo; by Gertrude Kasebier is similar in some ways to the fashion photograph of Kate moss, but very different at the same time, it is another type of portrait photography, without the fashion twist, Like the fashion photograph this is in black and white, unlike the other photograph this one is face on, when you look at the photograph your eyes automatically go to her face this is effective and a key factor that makes the picture a portrait photograph.
